How Much Mulch Do I Need?

We know… as soon as someone says there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, the math starts to feel overwhelming. Let’s make it easy. Start by measuring the length and width of the area you want to cover (it doesn’t have to be perfect — most beds aren’t perfect squares). Multiply those numbers to get your total square footage. Here’s the shortcut: One cubic yard of mulch covers approximately 100 square feet at a 3-inch depth. A 3-inch layer is ideal for moisture retention, weed suppression, and overall plant health. If you’re refreshing an area that already has some mulch down, you may be able to spread a yard a bit further — but for best results, we recommend maintaining that full 3-inch thickness.
